Opened in November 2021, Habitas AlUla cements the status of AlUla—an uncharted oasis in the canyons of the Ashar Valley in the northwest of Saudi Arabia—as the next great off-the-radar destination. The sustainability-minded, experience-led Habitas brand got its start in Mexico but recently expanded into Namibia and now KSA, promising a new style of laid-back luxury in the desert.
Serene pathways lead up to the 96 guest rooms, which are spread over three levels, and also to the yoga deck, wellness and fitness centers, restaurant, and swimming pool. Everything is made of ethically sourced organic materials that blend in with the environment, and the construction methods are low-impact, designed to minimize harm to the surroundings.
The restaurant, named Tama (“here” in Aramaic) spotlights food produced from sustainable agricultural methods and typical Saudi and Middle Eastern cuisine with a modern twist.
There is also a strong cultural component (music, learning, and culture being three of Habitas’s core values) with weekly outdoor cinema screenings of regional cultural films and documentaries, and open discussion lectures relating to local initiatives. There are also art exhibitions and guided walks through the remains of the ancient city where the Nabateans once lived.
